I have a westie who’s very itchy – Canine Dry Skin

I have a West Highland Terrier who itches constantly under her belly. She has turned black in areas and when brushed stuff like dandruff falls out.

Our Response

I Marie – how strange I just answered a question and mentioned that we own a Westie called Rosie who has the same condition. Unfortunately, it is very common in Westies to suffer from itching which leaves their skin dry and flakey. Dry skin conditions in West Highland Terriers is hereditary. However, there may be other reasons why your dog is itching. I would firstly take your dog to the vet – don’t use any products on your dog until you have received advice. Your vet will probably give your dog an antihistamine and will then recommend some really good and beneficial medicated shampoo. The vet may resort to steroids or prescribe a pill to help alleviate the itching – a pill called Atopica may be prescribed.

You could also visit a holistic vet as I mentioned in my last question as they will offer homoeopathy, acupuncture and nutritional advice. Your vet may also recommend a change in diet or even adding fish oil to his meals.

The first thing you should do is take your dog to the vet and then go from there. Don’t purchase or use any products on your dog until you have spoken to your vet first.

Hope this helps.
