Ingredient Review

The first ingredient is salmon. Although salmon is an excellent protein and omega-3 fatty acid source, raw salmon contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of salmon is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.

The second ingredient is chicken. Chicken is another excellent protein source. As with other raw meats, chicken contains a substantial amount of moisture and therefore the relative meat contribution of chicken is dramatically reduced after cooking.

The third ingredient is cane molasses. Cane molasses is a less refined form of sugar, made from sugar cane. It's naturally rich in various minerals including magnesium, manganese, iron, calcium, and potassium.

Cane molasses is however considered a controversial ingredient because it can raise a dogs blood sugar level, as it can with humans.

The fourth ingredient is tapioca starch. Tapioca starch is a gluten-free starch extracted from cassava roots. Starch is a necessary component in producing kibble and tapioca is an excellent choice in this regard.

The fifth ingredient is vegetable glycerin. Vegetable glycerin is a clear, orderless liquid derived from plant oils. It is often used to increase the product's moisture and/or improve palatability.

Next we have gelatin. Gelatin is produced from animal by-products and contains 98% to 99% protein by dry weight. However, gelatin protein is incomplete and lacks many essential amino acids.
