We'll begin this review of Halo Vigor Turkey and Roasted Quail with a detailed discussion of the ingredients.
The first ingredient is turkey. Although turkey is an excellent protein source, raw turkey contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of turkey is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.
The second ingredient is turkey broth. Turkey broth provides both flavor and moisture; however, as with other broths, turkey broth does not provide any notable nutritional contribution.
The third ingredient is turkey liver. Turkey liver is an excellent organ meat which provides high quality protein and fat. In addition, turkey liver provides many essential vitamins and minerals.
The fourth ingredient is quinoa. Quinoa is considered a "pseudocerial" because it's typically used like cereal grains (i.e. corn, wheat, millet), but it's not part of the grass family.
Quinoa is high in protein and provides a much better essential amino acid profile than most true cereal grains. Furthermore, quinoa is naturally rich in many vitamins and minerals.
The fifth ingredient is quail. Quail is another excellent novel protein source. As with other raw meats, quail contains a substantial amount of moisture and therefore the relative meat contribution of quail is dramatically reduced after cooking.
Because ingredients are listed in order of pre-cooked weight, the remaining ingredients in Halo Vigor Turkey and Roasted Quail are not as important as the first five ingredients.
However, collectively they still have a significant impact on the overall quality of the product. Therefore, we'll continue discussing the remaining ingredients in this Halo recipe.
Next we have tricalcium phosphate. Tricalcium phosphate is typically used for its mineral contents. However, it can also be used to evenly disperse fat in wet food products.
The next ingredient is potassium chloride. Potassium chloride is a potassium supplement.
Then we have kale. Kale is a nutritionally dense dark green vegetable rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Kale also contains sulforaphane, a compound believed to have anti-cancer properties.
Moving on, we have coconut oil. Coconut oil is an excellent source of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) which are easier to digest and believed to promote skin and coat health.
Moving on with this review, we have salt. Salt is an important mineral for both humans and dogs. Depending on the quantity of salt used (which we cannot determine), salt may or may not be a nutritious addition in the recipe.
The next ingredient in this review is choline chloride. Choline chloride is member of the B-vitamin complex (vitamin B4).
Our next ingredient is cranberry. Cranberries are rich in dietary fiber and provide a modest amount of vitamins such as vitamin C and minerals such as manganese.
The remaining ingredients in this Halo Vigor recipe are unlikely to affect the overall rating of the product.
Our analysis of the ingredients show that this product derives most of its protein from animal based sources. This is an excellent property because meat based protein contains all of the necessary amino acids required by dogs. In our option, this is one of the most important properties to judge when reviewing pet food, therefore we believe this is an exceptional product in this regard.
In summary, we recognize that this product does not contain any artificial colors, artificial preservatives, or anonymous meat ingredients.
The official PawDiet rating for Halo Vigor Turkey and Roasted Quail is 4.0 out of 5.
