Purina Pro Plan Recalls Select Veterinary Diets Due To Elevated Levels of Vitamin D

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company has voluntarily issued a recall of select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food. This recall is due to concerns over potentially elevated levels of vitamin D, which could lead to health issues in dogs.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs. However, ingestion of elevated levels can cause health problems depending on the amount of vitamin D and the length of exposure. Symptoms of vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling. In severe cases, renal (kidney) dysfunction may occur.

This action comes after Purina received two reports of dogs exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the product. Both cases have been confirmed, and the dogs have since recovered after being removed from the diet.

The recalled dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States and could only be obtained by prescription through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers that validate prescriptions.

The affected products are 8 lb and 20 lb bags of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) with the following UPC codes and production codes:

  • UPC Codes
    • 38100 19190 – 8 lb

Pet owners who have purchased bags of the above product are urged to stop feeding it to their pets and dispose of it immediately. It should be discarded in a secure container that no other animals, including wildlife, can access.

Pet owners are also advised to watch out for signs such as weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, or increased thirst or urination in their dogs. If such symptoms occur, pet owners should immediately contact their veterinarian.

It’s important to note that this recall does not affect any other Purina products.

Retail partners, including veterinary clinics, are asked to remove the affected product from their inventory and dispose of it properly.
