The first ingredient is pea. Peas are starchy members of the legume family. Other than carbohydrates, peas are notably high in plant based protein and various vitamins and minerals.
The second ingredient is sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are a common gluten free carbohydrate source in pet food. In addition to its fiber content, sweet potatoes are an excellent source of beta carotene, an important antioxidant which serves as a precursor to vitamin A.
The third ingredient is vegetable glycerin. Vegetable glycerin is a clear, orderless liquid derived from plant oils. It is often used to increase the product's moisture and/or improve palatability.
The fourth ingredient is turkey meal. Turkey meal is produced by cooking turkey using a process called rendering. The rendering process dramatically reduces the natural moisture of turkey and thereby results in a highly condensed protein source.
The fifth ingredient is cane molasses. Cane molasses is a less refined form of sugar, made from sugar cane. It's naturally rich in various minerals including magnesium, manganese, iron, calcium, and potassium.
Cane molasses is however considered a controversial ingredient because it can raise a dogs blood sugar level, as it can with humans.
Next we have gelatin. Gelatin is produced from animal by-products and contains 98% to 99% protein by dry weight. However, gelatin protein is incomplete and lacks many essential amino acids.
The next ingredient is turkey. Although turkey is an excellent protein source, raw turkey contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of turkey is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.
Then we have apple. Apples are high in dietary fiber and provide a modest amount of vitamins and minerals.
Moving on, we have chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid). Chicken fat is typically collected while cooking chicken using a process called rendering. Chicken fat is a relatively high quality source of essential fatty acids. In particular, chicken fat is high in linoleic acid, an important omega-6 fatty acid.
Moving on with this review, we have natural flavor. Natural flavor enhances the flavor of the product. The difference between natural and artificial flavoring is that natural flavoring starts from a plant or animal whereas artificial flavoring is entirely man-made.
