Review of Diamond Naturals
Adult Dog Biscuits With Beef Meal

Ingredient Review

The first ingredient is pearled barley. Pearled barley is barley with the outer husk and bran layers removed. Similar to regular barley, pearled barley provides carbohydrates and dietary fiber. Pearled barley is however not as nutritious as regular whole grain barley.

The second ingredient is beef meal. Beef meal is produced by cooking beef using a process called rendering. The rendering process dramatically reduces the natural moisture of beef and thereby results in a highly condensed protein source.

The third ingredient is brown rice. Brown rice is naturally rich in fiber and various minerals including manganese, phosphorus, and magnesium. Relative to other grains, brown rice is easy to digest.

The fourth ingredient is beef. Although beef is an excellent protein source, raw beef contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of beef is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.

The fifth ingredient is rolled oats. Rolled oats are an excellent carbohydrate source with considerable nutrients in addition to dietary fiber. More specifically, oats are rich in B vitamins and various minerals including manganese.

Next we have cane molasses. Cane molasses is a less refined form of sugar, made from sugar cane. It's naturally rich in various minerals including magnesium, manganese, iron, calcium, and potassium.

Cane molasses is however considered a controversial ingredient because it can raise a dogs blood sugar level, as it can with humans.

The next ingredient is canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols). Canola oil is a plant-derived oil from the seeds of canola plants. Although fat is an essential component of any diet, canola oil is controversial in pet food. Proponents claim that canola oil provides a better fat profile in comparison to other plant based oils. However, opponents claim that canola oil is typically produced with genetically modified rapeseed and that rapeseed oil has multiple adverse health affects.

Then we have whole flaxseed. Whole flaxseeds are an outstanding source of omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fiber. They also provide a notable amount of protein, B vitamins, and various minerals.

Moving on, we have natural flavor. Natural flavor enhances the flavor of the product. The difference between natural and artificial flavoring is that natural flavoring starts from a plant or animal whereas artificial flavoring is entirely man-made.
