We'll begin this review of Diamond Naturals Chicken Dinner with a detailed discussion of the ingredients.
The first ingredient is chicken. Although chicken is an excellent protein source, raw chicken contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of chicken is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.
The second ingredient is chicken broth. Chicken broth provides both flavor and moisture; however, as with other broths, chicken broth does not provide any notable nutritional contribution.
The third ingredient is chicken liver. Chicken liver is an excellent organ meat which provides high quality protein and fat. In addition, chicken liver provides many essential vitamins and minerals.
The fourth ingredient is rice flour. Rice flour is a gluten-free carbohydrate source. As long as the bran and germ of the grain are included in the flour, rice flour can provide a notable amount of fiber and nutrition. However, because the type of rice ("brown" or "white") is not specified, we cannot make this determination.
The fifth ingredient is chicken meal (preserved with mixed tocopherols). Chicken meal is produced by cooking chicken using a process called rendering. The rendering process dramatically reduces the natural moisture of chicken and thereby results in a highly condensed protein source.
Because ingredients are listed in order of pre-cooked weight, the remaining ingredients in Diamond Naturals Chicken Dinner are not as important as the first five ingredients.
However, collectively they still have a significant impact on the overall quality of the product. Therefore, we'll continue discussing the remaining ingredients in this Diamond recipe.
Next we have carrot. Carrots are an excellent source of dietary fiber and minerals. In addition, carrots are rich in beta carotene, an antioxidant which is a precursor to vitamin A.
The next ingredient is dried egg product. Dried egg product consists of shell-free eggs which are easy to digest and contain high quality protein. Egg protein is often given the highest biological value (BV). The BV metric measures the usability of the ingredient's protein.
Then we have flaxseed oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), which provides a healthy dose of essential fatty acids.
Moving on, we have guar gum. Guar gum (or guaran) is obtained from guar beans which have been dehusked, milled and screened. It's commonly used in wet food products as a thickening agent and provides a notable amount of dietary fiber.
Moving on with this review, we have potassium chloride. Potassium chloride is a potassium supplement.
The next ingredient in this review is salt. Salt is an important mineral for both humans and dogs. Depending on the quantity of salt used (which we cannot determine), salt may or may not be a nutritious addition in the recipe.
Our next ingredient is agar-agar, which is commonly used as a thickening or gelling agent.
pumpkin is the next ingredient in this recipe. Pumpkin is naturally rich in many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Pumpkin is also an excellent source of dietary fiber.
Next on the list is quinoa. Quinoa is considered a "pseudocerial" because it's typically used like cereal grains (i.e. corn, wheat, millet), but it's not part of the grass family.
Quinoa is high in protein and provides a much better essential amino acid profile than most true cereal grains. Furthermore, quinoa is naturally rich in many vitamins and minerals.
The next ingredient in this recipe is cranberry. Cranberries are rich in dietary fiber and provide a modest amount of vitamins such as vitamin C and minerals such as manganese.
Next we have blueberry. Blueberries are an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and manganese.
The next ingredient is dried kelp, which is a nutritionally dense seaweed. Kelp is naturally rich in a multitude of vitamins and minerals.
The remaining ingredients in this Diamond Naturals recipe are unlikely to affect the overall rating of the product.
Our analysis of the ingredients show that this product derives most of its protein from animal based sources. This is an excellent property because meat based protein contains all of the necessary amino acids required by dogs. In our option, this is one of the most important properties to judge when reviewing pet food, therefore we believe this is an exceptional product in this regard.
In summary, we recognize that this product does not contain any artificial colors, artificial preservatives, or anonymous meat ingredients.
The official PawDiet rating for Diamond Naturals Chicken Dinner is 5.0 out of 5.
