We'll begin this review of Fromm Gold Kitten with a detailed discussion of the ingredients.
The first ingredient is duck. Although duck is an excellent animal based protein source, raw duck contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of duck is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.
The second ingredient is chicken meal. Chicken meal is produced by cooking chicken using a process called rendering. The rendering process dramatically reduces the natural moisture of chicken and thereby results in a highly condensed protein source.
The third ingredient is pearled barley. Pearled barley is barley with the outer husk and bran layers removed. Similar to regular barley, pearled barley provides carbohydrates and dietary fiber. Pearled barley is however not as nutritious as regular whole grain barley.
The fourth ingredient is white rice. White rice is produced by removing the husk, germ, and bran of rice grains. Unlike brown rice which contains the bran and germ, white rice is nutritionally empty.
The fifth ingredient is salmon meal. Salmon meal is produced by cooking salmon using a process called rendering. The rendering process dramatically reduces the natural moisture of salmon and thereby results in a highly condensed protein source.
Because ingredients are listed in order of pre-cooked weight, the remaining ingredients in Fromm Gold Kitten are not as important as the first five ingredients.
However, collectively they still have a significant impact on the overall quality of the product. Therefore, we'll continue discussing the remaining ingredients in this Fromm recipe.
Next we have chicken fat, which is most likely used because of it's essential omega-6 fatty acid content.
The next ingredient is chicken liver. Chicken liver is an excellent organ meat which provides high quality protein and fat. In addition, chicken liver provides many essential vitamins and minerals.
Then we have dried whole egg. Dried whole eggs are easy to digest and contain high quality protein. Egg protein is often given the highest biological value (BV). The BV metric measures the usability of the ingredient's protein.
Moving on, we have dried tomato pomace. Dried tomato pomace is a by-product of tomato manufacturing. It's considered a controversial ingredient because many people believe it is an inexpensive low quality filler. However, tomato pomace provides a notable amount of dietary fiber, B vitamins, Lycopene, and vitamin A. Although it is a very inexpensive ingredient, it is not nutritionally empty.
Moving on with this review, we have salmon oil. Salmon oil is an outstanding source of omega-3 fatty acids, an important part of a cat diet.
The next ingredient in this review is chicken broth. Chicken broth provides both flavor and moisture; however, as with other broths, chicken broth does not provide any notable nutritional contribution.
Our next ingredient is potato. Potatoes are commonly used in pet food as a gluten free carbohydrate source which also provides various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
flaxseed is the next ingredient in this recipe. Flaxseeds are an outstanding source of omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fiber. They also provide a notable amount of protein, B vitamins, and various minerals.
Next on the list is oat fiber. Oat fiber is a concentrated dietary fiber source. Fiber can help stabilize blood sugar levels and improve or maintain colon health.
The next ingredient in this recipe is cheese. Cheese is an ingredient derived from milk. The overall affect of this ingredient on the recipe cannot be determined without knowing the specific type of cheese included. In general, cheese is not something we'd like to see in cat food recipes.
Next we have dried brewers yeast. Dried brewers yeast is a by-product of the brewing industry. Brewers yeast is rich in various minerals and contains a notable amount of protein.
The remaining ingredients in this Fromm Gold recipe are unlikely to affect the overall rating of the product.
Our analysis of the ingredients show that this product derives most of its protein from animal based sources. This is an excellent property because meat based protein contains all of the necessary amino acids required by cats. In our option, this is one of the most important properties to judge when reviewing pet food, therefore we believe this is an exceptional product in this regard.
In summary, we recognize that this product does not contain any artificial colors, artificial preservatives, or anonymous meat ingredients.
The official PawDiet rating for Fromm Gold Kitten is 4.5 out of 5.
