Fromm Gold Turkey Pate is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.
We'll begin this review of Fromm Gold Turkey Pate with a detailed discussion of the ingredients.
The first ingredient is turkey. Although turkey is an excellent protein source, raw turkey contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of turkey is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.
The second ingredient is broth. Broths provides both flavor and moisture; however, broths do not provide any notable nutritional contribution. In addition, we typically prefer the specific type of broth specified (chicken broth, vegetable broth, lamb broth, etc), which is not done here.
The third ingredient is turkey liver. Turkey liver is an excellent organ meat which provides high quality protein and fat. In addition, turkey liver provides many essential vitamins and minerals.
The fourth ingredient is pearled barley. Pearled barley is barley with the outer husk and bran layers removed. Similar to regular barley, pearled barley provides carbohydrates and dietary fiber. Pearled barley is however not as nutritious as regular whole grain barley.
The fifth ingredient is potato. Potatoes are commonly used in pet food as a gluten free carbohydrate source which also provides various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Because ingredients are listed in order of pre-cooked weight, the remaining ingredients in Fromm Gold Turkey Pate are not as important as the first five ingredients.
However, collectively they still have a significant impact on the overall quality of the product. Therefore, we'll continue discussing the remaining ingredients in this Fromm recipe.
Next we have carrot. Carrots are an excellent source of dietary fiber and minerals. In addition, carrots are rich in beta carotene, an antioxidant which is a precursor to vitamin A.
The next ingredient is chicken. Chicken is another excellent protein source. As with other raw meats, chicken contains a substantial amount of moisture and therefore the relative meat contribution of chicken is dramatically reduced after cooking.
Then we have pea. Peas are starchy members of the legume family. Other than carbohydrates, peas are notably high in plant based protein and various vitamins and minerals.
Moving on, we have tomato paste. Tomato paste is produced by cooking tomatoes for several hours. The seeds and skins of the tomatoes are removed in the process. Nutritionally, it's rich in dietary fiber, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.
Moving on with this review, we have salt. Salt is an important mineral for both humans and dogs. Depending on the quantity of salt used (which we cannot determine), salt may or may not be a nutritious addition in the recipe.
The next ingredient in this review is potassium chloride. Potassium chloride is a potassium supplement.
The remaining ingredients in this Fromm Gold recipe are unlikely to affect the overall rating of the product.
Our analysis of the ingredients show that this product derives most of its protein from animal based sources. This is an excellent property because meat based protein contains all of the necessary amino acids required by dogs. In our option, this is one of the most important properties to judge when reviewing pet food, therefore we believe this is an exceptional product in this regard.
In summary, we recognize that this product contains anonymous meat ingredients. These are not necessarily always negative; however, they are typically low quality and inexpensive additions. If the particular anonymous meat ingredient is controversial or low quality, it should have been discussed earlier in this review. Otherwise, it is safe to assume the anonymous meat ingredient is an acceptable addition.
