Ingredient Review

The first ingredient is water sufficient for processing. Water of course only provides moisture, a necessary component of wet products.

The second ingredient is chicken. Although chicken is an excellent protein source, raw chicken contains more than 60% moisture. After cooking, the relative meat contribution of chicken is dramatically reduced. Therefore, it's important to ensure that other meat sources are included within the first few ingredients to ensure the product derives most of its protein from meat.

The third ingredient is potato. Potatoes are commonly used in pet food as a gluten free carbohydrate source which also provides various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The fourth ingredient is pea. Peas are starchy members of the legume family. Other than carbohydrates, peas are notably high in plant based protein and various vitamins and minerals.

The fifth ingredient is carrot. Carrots are an excellent source of dietary fiber and minerals. In addition, carrots are rich in beta carotene, an antioxidant which is a precursor to vitamin A.

Next we have sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is an omega-6 fatty acid source. Unlike other oils (flax, canola, etc), sunflower oil does not provide omega-3 fatty acids; However, the balancing omega-3 fatty acids are most likely supplied by another oil or fat source.

The next ingredient is xanthan gum, which is used as a thickening and suspending agent. It's usually produced by bacterial fermentation and does not provide any nutritional value.
