Ingredient Review

The first ingredient is lamb meal. Lamb meal is produced by cooking lamb using a process called rendering. The rendering process dramatically reduces the natural moisture of lamb and thereby results in a highly condensed protein source.

The second ingredient is sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are a common gluten free carbohydrate source in pet food. In addition to its fiber content, sweet potatoes are an excellent source of beta carotene, an important antioxidant which serves as a precursor to vitamin A.

The third ingredient is pea. Peas are starchy members of the legume family. Other than carbohydrates, peas are notably high in plant based protein and various vitamins and minerals.

The fourth ingredient is potato. Potatoes provide a notable amount of dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. In addition, potatoes are gluten free and therefore commonly found in grain free and gluten free products.

The fifth ingredient is tapioca starch. Tapioca starch is a gluten-free starch extracted from cassava roots. Starch is a necessary component in producing kibble and tapioca is an excellent choice in this regard.

Next we have potato starch. Potato starch is a gluten-free ingredient extracted from potatoes. Unlike whole potatoes, the starch itself does not provide a notable amount of nutrition.

The next ingredient is poultry fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols). Poultry fat is a by-product of poultry tissue rendering. Poultry fat is a controversial ingredient because the specific protein is not specified. Such ingredients are typically low-quality in comparison to named poultry fats (e.g. chicken fat, turkey fat).

Then we have ground flaxseed. Ground flaxseeds are an outstanding source of omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fiber. They also provide a notable amount of protein, B vitamins, and various minerals.

Moving on, we have natural flavor. Natural flavor enhances the flavor of the product. The difference between natural and artificial flavoring is that natural flavoring starts from a plant or animal whereas artificial flavoring is entirely man-made.

Moving on with this review, we have gelatin. Gelatin is produced from animal by-products and contains 98% to 99% protein by dry weight. However, gelatin protein is incomplete and lacks many essential amino acids.
