TFP Nutrition Expands Pet Food Recall Due to Salmonella Risk (Multiple Brands)

TFP Nutrition has announced a significant expansion of their voluntary pet food recall, now encompassing all dry dog, cat, and catfish formulas produced at their Nacogdoches, Texas facility. This precautionary recall is due to the potential risk of Salmonella contamination, which can affect both pets and their owners.

The initial recall, which started on October 20, 2023, focused on 50-pound bags of Retriever Mini Chunk Chicken Recipe. It has now been widened to include a broader range of products after further investigation.

Salmonella, a bacterial infection, can cause serious health issues. Humans handling the contaminated pet food, especially without proper handwashing, can contract the infection. Symptoms in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, and in rare cases, more severe ailments like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Those displaying these symptoms after contact with the recalled product should seek medical attention.

Pets, too, are at risk. Signs of Salmonella infection in animals include lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only show reduced appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Even healthy pets can be carriers of Salmonella, potentially infecting other animals and humans. Pet owners are advised to consult their veterinarians if their pets have consumed the recalled product and exhibit these symptoms.

TFP Nutrition is actively collaborating with retailers to remove the affected products from circulation. Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled formulas should immediately cease feeding them to their pets and dispose of the product and its packaging.

This recall includes multiple pet food brands. To see a comprehensive list of the recalled products, along with their specific date codes, please refer to this table posted on the FDA website.
