Salmonella can cause serious illness in animals consuming the contaminated products and poses a risk to humans from handling affected pet treats, particularly if hands and any exposed surfaces are not thoroughly washed after contact. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can lead to more severe conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers who develop these signs after handling the recalled products should seek medical attention from their healthcare provider.
Pets infected with Salmonella may display symptoms including lethargy, diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Some infected pets may show only mild signs or appear otherwise healthy while still carrying and potentially transmitting the bacteria to other animals or humans. Pet owners whose dogs have consumed the recalled products and are showing these symptoms should contact their veterinarian immediately.
The potential contamination was discovered through routine sampling conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which confirmed the presence of Salmonella in the finished products. No illnesses have been reported in pets or humans to date in connection with this recall. Consumers Supply Distributing has ceased production and distribution of the affected lots and is working with the FDA to investigate the cause of the issue.
Consumers are advised to immediately discontinue feeding the recalled products to their pets. The unused portion of the product should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any bowls, utensils, or surfaces that came into contact with the recalled treats should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.
