Elite Treats Recalls Dog Treats Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination
Elite Treats, LLC, a pet treat company based in Boca Raton, Florida, is voluntarily recalling a single lot of its Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Salmonella can cause illness in pets and poses a health risk to people who handle contaminated products or come into contact with infected pets or contaminated surfaces.
The recall affects the following product:
Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs – 6 oz. bags (Lot Number: 24045, Expiration Date: 04/2027)
The recalled product is packaged in a black-and-gold 6-ounce bag, with the lot number and expiration date printed on the back of the package.
The affected product was sold to Florida Hardware, LLC, which distributed it to feed stores in the following U.S. states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people. Healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can lead to more severe conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable. People who experience these symptoms after handling the recalled product or having contact with a pet that has consumed it should contact their healthcare provider.
Pets infected with Salmonella may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Some pets may carry the bacteria without showing symptoms but can still shed Salmonella in their feces or saliva, potentially spreading it to people and other animals in the household. Pet owners whose dogs have consumed the recalled product and are showing symptoms, or who have concerns about possible infection, should contact their veterinarian.
The potential contamination was identified after testing conducted by a third-party laboratory detected Salmonella in a related but commercially unreleased lot of the same product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recalled lot.
Consumers who have purchased the affected product should stop using it immediately. The recalled treats should not be sold or donated and should be disposed of in a manner that prevents access by children, pets, or wildlife. Pet food bowls, storage containers, utensils, and any surfaces that came into contact with the product should be thoroughly washed and sanitized. Consumers are also advised to wash their hands thoroughly after handling the recalled product or any related items.
For more information about returning the recalled product for a refund or replacement, consumers may contact Elite Treats, LLC at elite.treats@yahoo.com or by phone at 561-901-5310, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
