Foodynamics Issues Recall for Multiple Freeze-Dried Pet Treats Over Salmonella Risk

Foodynamics, a pet treat manufacturer based in Wales, Wisconsin, has issued a voluntary recall for specific lots of Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, Kanu Pets, and What’s In the Bowl brand freeze-dried pet treats due to potential contamination with Salmonella.

The recalled items are packaged in resealable plastic bags or pouches ranging from 0.1 oz. sample sizes to 16 oz. (1 lb.) portions, with product details and lot information printed on stickers affixed to the back labels. A total of eight packages were distributed via UPS from Wisconsin to retailers in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida starting in late 2024.

The following products are included in the recall:

  • Raw Dog Barkery Whole Chicken Hearts (16 oz.) with Use By Date & Lot #: 030527
  • What’s In the Bowl Whole Chicken Hearts (3 oz. and 16 oz.) with Use By Date & Lot #: 030527
  • BellePepper Cats Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Slices (3 oz.) with Use By Date & Lot #: 031627
  • BellePepper Cats Freeze Dried Sample Treats (Unpackaged & Unlabeled) (0.1 oz.) with Use By Date & Lot #: 121426, 011526
  • Kanu Pets Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Raw Treats (3 oz.) with Use By Date & Lot #: 031627

Salmonella infections can impact both pets and humans. Pets exhibiting symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Even asymptomatic infected pets can serve as carriers, potentially spreading the bacteria to other animals or people.

Humans handling contaminated treats face risks, especially without thorough handwashing or sanitizing of contact surfaces. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In rare instances, the infection may cause severe complications like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract issues. Individuals experiencing these after exposure should seek medical advice from their healthcare provider.

The issue came to light through FDA sampling that detected Salmonella in the products. Foodynamics has halted production and distribution pending a joint investigation with the FDA to determine the root cause. No illnesses in pets or humans have been reported to date. The company has fully traced the distribution chain, notified all direct customers, and coordinated with retailers to quarantine affected inventory and issue refunds.

Consumers should not feed, sell, or donate the recalled treats to pets or other animals. Return products to the point of purchase for a full refund, or dispose of them securely to prevent access by children, pets, or wildlife. Thoroughly wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups, storage containers, utensils, and any surfaces that may have contacted the treats. Always wash hands after handling pet products.
