Salmonella infections can affect both pets and humans. Pets may show symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain. Infected pets, even if asymptomatic, can carry the bacteria and spread it to other animals or people. Pet owners noticing these symptoms should consult their veterinarian.
Humans can become infected by handling contaminated pet products, particularly without proper handwashing or cleaning of exposed surfaces. Symptoms in people include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In rare cases, Salmonella can lead to more serious issues like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract problems. Those who develop symptoms after contact with the product should contact their healthcare provider.
The contamination was identified when samples were collected on September 11, 2025, and tested by the Food and Drug Administration, which confirmed the presence of Salmonella. No illnesses in dogs have been reported to date. The company has stopped production and distribution of the product while the FDA and the company investigate the cause.
Consumers are advised not to sell, donate, or feed the recalled products to pets or any other animals. Products should be returned to the place of purchase or securely destroyed to prevent access by children, pets, or wildlife. Pet food bowls, cups, storage containers, and any surfaces that came into contact with the recalled products should be thoroughly washed and sanitized. Handwashing after handling pet treats is strongly recommended.
