What Does Scabies Look Like…?

Demodectic Mange in Dogs

The causes of dog scabies or sarcoptic mange are mites also known by their scientific name as sarcoptes scabiei. We will discuss two types of mange, including Sarcoptic Mange and Demodectic Mange.

Demodectic Mange

  • Demodectic mange is caused by the demodex canis worm like mite and tends to affect younger dogs from the age of 3 to 12 months, especially those that have a weak immune system. It’s main difference to scabies is the fact that it doesn’t itch and is considered much less severe than scabies.
  • There have also been some studies that demodectic mange can be hereditary.
  • Sometimes when a dog has been moved to another sleeping area or other changes in his environment maybe enough to trigger the infection.
  • Demodectic mange may start in one area and then progress to other areas on the dog’s body.

The symptoms of demodectic mange on dogs includes the following…

  • Localized mange can include hair loss around specific areas, normally around the eyes, head and muzzle.
  • Generalized mange can include hair loss in patches allover the dog’s body.
  • The skin may appear scaly and red.
  • Your dog may lose his appetite
  • Restlessness and fever.

Treatment and medications for demodectic mange…

  • Treatment for demodectic mange in dogs can include a dip using an insecticide of mitaban. Your dog’s hair will then need to be clipped and a use of benzoyl peroxide shampoo

What Does Scabies Look Like…?

Sarcoptic Mange in Dogs

  • Scabies is caused by mites known as Sarcoptes Scabiei, it is very contagious and can be caught by humans.
  • The mites burrow under the skin and lay their eggs in the tunnels.
  • Serum which is the clear substance in blood rises to the surface of the skin causing scabs.
  • The parasitic mite can live on it’s host for anything up to 21 days without having to feed.
  • The mites can live anywhere in your House, including bedding, collars, carpets, combs and brushes.

Scabies symptoms can include…

  • Flaky skin
  • Itchy red skin
  • Scabs and sores
  • Inflamed skin
  • Frantic itching
  • Loss of hair
  • Listlessness
