English Pointer – Height 61-69 cm or (24-27 inches) and capable of weighing 20-30 kg (44-66 pounds). Out of our list of large dog breeds the English Pointer is at it’s best on the open country and does need lots of exercise. Their coat is short and normally colored lemon, orange, liver or black. This breed has a lifespan from 13-14 years. A good natured and obedient dog breed.

Large Munsterlander – Height 59-61 cm or (23-24 inches) and capable of weighing 25-29 kg (55-65 pounds). The coat is long and quite dense and is normally always colored black and white with flecks. Not the best dog breed if you live in the city as they prefer rural life. A very affectionate breed that is good with children and other pets. A trustworthy and a great dog to have as a companion. This breed has a lifespan of 12-13 years.

St Bernard – Out of our entire list of large dog breeds this is one of largest growing to a height of 61-71 cm or (24-28 inches) and a weight of 50-91 kg (110-200 pounds). A very large dog that can have two types of coats (smooth and rough). The coat is normally colored orange, mahogany brindle or red brindle.This breed are very intelligent and trustworthy but do need to live in a large property. Due to their size they do need lots of food so can cost allot when it comes to purchasing dog food. Great around the family and good with children – they have a lifespan of 11 years. A great dog if you have the space.

Rottweiler – Height 58-69 cm or (23-27 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 41-50 kg (90-110 pounds). The coat is always colored black with patches of dark brown. In our list of large dog breeds this is the breed with the worst (undeserved) reputation. This breed is self assured, a great guard dog and is not aggressive or vicious by nature. The Rottweiler has a lifespan of 11-12 years and is happy to live in the city or the country.

Pyrenean Mountain Dog – Height 65-81 cm or (26-31 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 45-60 kg (99-132 pounds). The coat is dense with a very fine undercoat and slightly wavy outer coat – normally always colored white. Out of our list of large dog breeds it is one of the most intelligent. An independent dog that is gentle, affectionate and tolerant around children. This breed does have a strong territorial instinct. The Pyrenean Mountain Dogs has a lifespan of 11-12 years of age.

Old English Sheepdog – Height of 56-61 cm or (22-24 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 29.5-30.5 kg or (65-67 pounds). A large dog with a very messy outer coat normally always grey and white in color. This very intelligent breed needs lots of love and attention and thrives on human companionship – the Old English Sheepdog is also good with children. They have a lifespan of 12-13 years of age.

Newfoundland – Height of 66-71 cm or (26-28 inches) and is capable of reaching a weight of 50-68 kg or (110-150 pounds). This breed have a thick coat that can get oily – the coat is normally black, white or chocolate with a white chest. This breed are very gentle (almost docile), loyal and love to be around water. The Newfoundland need lots of exercise and can live to 11 years of age.

Mastiff – Height of 70-76 cm or (27-30 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 86-100 kg or (190-220 pounds). The Mastiff have a short coat that can come in a variety of colors from dark fawn, brindle, silver fawn and apricot fawn. A good natured and very courageous breed. Out of our list of large dog breeds this has the shortest lifespan of 7-10 years.

Maremma Sheepdog – Height of 60-73 cm or (23.5-18.5 inches) and capable of reaching a weight of 30-45 kg or (66-100 pounds). The coat is harsh and is always white in color. This breed are very intelligent, lively and love to be outdoors. The Maremma Sheepdog can be a little difficult when it comes to dog obedience training and are not always good with other dogs. They have a lifespan of 11-13 years of age.

Great Dane – The largest in our list of large dog breeds at 71-76 cm or (28-30 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 46-54 kg or (100-120 pounds). The coat is short and although it can come in a variety of colors it is normally colored fawn. A great companion dog that is devoted to the family – can be expensive. The Great Dane has a lifespan of 10 years.

Dobermann – Height of 65-69 cm or (23.5-27 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 30-40 kg or (66-88 pounds). The coat is smooth and short and comes in back, brown, blue or fawn (but always with tanned markings). A very intelligent, loyal and obedient dog breed. A fantastic guard dog (probably the est in our list of large dog breeds) and good with the family if well trained with strict boundaries.

Bullmastiff – Height of 64-69 cm or (25-27 inches) and capable of reaching a weight of 41-59 kg or (90-130 pounds). The coat is short and is normally colored fawn or brindle with a black mask. This breed are calm, very gentle but also protective A great family dog that is good with children but can be stubborn and difficult to train.

Briard – Height of 57-69 cm or (23-27 inches) and capable of reaching a weight of 33.5-34.5 kg or (74-76 pounds). The coat is long is wavy colored black, or dark fawn. A very intelligent, happy and fearless dog breed. The Briard needs lots of exercise is a great watch dog and has a lifespan of 11-13 years.

Boxer – Out of our list of large dog breeds this is our favorite. The Boxer grows to a height of 53-63 cm or (21-25 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 25-32 kg or (55-70 pounds). The Boxer has a short coat that comes in many different shades of fawn but always with a black face muzzle. The Boxer is a very self assured and fearless dog breed. A great family dog that has a lifespan of 12 years of age.

Bernese Mountain Dog – Height of 58-70 cm or (23-27 inches) and capable of reaching a weight of 40-44 kg or (87-90 pounds). The coat is soft, silky and long and is normally colored black with red/brown and white markings. This breed are very good natured and are devoted to the family (although they do need a good handler). This breed are very easy when it comes to dog obedience training. A good watch dog with a lifespan of 10-12 years of age.

Malinois – Height of 56-66 cm or (22-26 inches) and growing to a weight of 27.5-28.5 kg or (61-63 pounds). The coat is short and normally fawn with black markings with a black mask. A very alert and active dog that is also easy when it comes to dog obedience training. The Malinois has a strong guarding instinct, good with children if well socialized and has a lifespan of 12-14 years of age.

Laeknois – Height of 56-66 cm or (22-26 inches) and capable of reaching a weight of 27.5-28.5 kg or (61-63 pounds). The coat is short, wiry, dry and normally colored reddish/fawn with black coloring on the muzzle. A very active ad alert dog which is very easily trained. Although the Laeknois is good with children it is not good with other dogs. The Laeknois has a lifespan of 12-14 years.

Tervueren – Height of 56-66 cm or (22-26 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 27.5-28.5 kg or (61-63 pounds). The coat is long and straight and comes in lots of colors including red, grey, fawn with black overlay. This breed is easy when it comes to dog obedience training – the Tervueren is alert, active but does need firm control and regular exercise. The breed has a lifespan of 12-14 years.

Groenendael – Height of 56-66 cm or (22-26 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 27.5-28.5 kg or (61-63 pounds). The coat is long straight and is colored black (sometimes with white markings). A very vigilant, intelligent and out of our list of large dog breeds one of the least likely dog breeds to be aggressive. This breed are also easy to train but need lots of exercise. The Groenendael has a lifespan of 13-14 years.

Giant Schnauzer – Height of 59-70 cm or (23.5-27.5 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 32-35 kg or (70-77 pounds). The coat is wiry, short and comes in lots of colors but most commonly black and pepper. The Giant Schnauzer is fairly easy to train but needs lots of exercise and can be difficult around other dogs. This breed has a lifespan of 12-14 years.

Japanese Akita – Height of 60-71 cm or (24-28 inches) and growing to a weight of 34-50 kg or ( 75-110 pounds). The coat is short and comes in lots of colors. A very loyal and courageous dog that needs an experienced owner. The Japanese Akita is not easy when it comes to dog obedience training and not great with large households or around children – this breed has a lifespan of 10-12 years of age.Out of our list of large dog breeds the Akita is the worst around children.

Weimaraner – Height of 56-69 cm or (22-27 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 32-39 kg or (70.5-86 pounds). The coat is short and colored silver grey. The Weimaraner is an alert and obedient dog that does have very strong hunting instincts. This breed needs lots of exercise and is not good around children. The Weimaraner has a lifespan of 12-13 years of age.

Hungarian Vizsla – Height of 57-64 cm or (22.5-25 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 22-30 kg or (48.5-66 pounds). The coat can be smooth or wiry and is normally colored rusty gold. A very affectionate and loving dog breed and very easy when it comes to dog training. The Hungarian Vizsla has a lifespan of 14-15 years.

Italian Spinone – Out of our list of large dog breeds the Italian Spinone (and Saluki) is the most graceful breed. The Italian Spinone grows to a height of 61-66 cm or (24-26 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 27-32 kg or (71-82 pounds). The coat is colored white with brown or orange markings. This breed are faithful, relaxed and easy going. In our list of large dog breeds the Italian Spinone is one of the best around children. This breed love to be around the family, are loyal, courageous and need lots of exercise. The breed have a lifespan of 12-13 years of age.

Irish Setter – Height of 64-69 cm or (25-27 inches) and weighing 27-32 kg or (60-70 pounds). The coat is wavy, glossy and always colored rich chestnut. An affectionate dog that is playful and good around children. The Irish Setter needs regular obedience training, lots of exercise and loves to rural life. The Irish Setter has a lifespan of 13 years of age.

Gordon Setter – Height of 62-66 cm or (24-26 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 23-30 kg or (56-65 pounds). The coat is wavy and colored black with brown tan markings. A very relaxed and even tempered breed, loyal and good with children. The Gordon Setter has a lifespan of 13 years of age.

Saluki – Height of 8-71 cm or (23-28 inches) and growing to a weight of 14-25 kg or (31-55 pounds). A very graceful dog with a coat that comes in lots of colors including gold, red, tri-color and silver. An affectionate dog that is great with children but normally hates cats. The Saluki needs lots of exercise and has a lifespan of 12 years – a great dog.

Rhodesian Ridgeback – Height of 61-67 cm or (24-27 inches) and capable of reaching a weight of 30-39 kg or (65-85 pounds). The coat is short and normally colored light wheaton or red wheaton. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is not aggressive, is loyal but nor good with other dogs or small children. This breed has a lifespan of 12 years of age.

Irish Wolfhound  – Height of 71-90 cm or (28-35 inches) and reaching a weight of 40-55 kg or (90-120 pounds). The coat is wiry and is colored grey, brindle. red, black, fawn, white or wheaton. This breed are patient and can be very sensitive. Good with children and great with other pets but does need lots of exercise. The Irsh Wolfhound has a lifespan of 11 years of age.

Pharaoh – The oldest breed in our list of large dog breeds going back some 5,000 years. The Pharaoh reaches a height of 56-63 cm or (22-25 inches) and capable of weighing 20-25 kg or (45-55 pounds). The coat is short and is colored tan but also with white markings on the tail, toes and chest. This breed can be difficult to train and like to live in the country. This breed has a lifespan of 12-14 years of age.

English Foxhound  – Height of 58-69 cm or (23-27 inches) and weighing 25-34 kg or (55075 pounds). The coat is wiry and normally comes in two or three colors – white, orange and black. This breed are often very difficult to train, need lots of exercise and have a lifespan of 11 years of age.

Deerhound – Height of 71-76 cm or (28-30 inches) and capable of growing to a weight of 36-5 kg or (80-100 pounds). The coat is wiry and comes in numerous colors including dark blue/grey, yellow, red/fawn, sandy/red and brindle. The Deerhound is friendly, gentle and very rarely aggressive. This breed is easy to train and has a lifespan of 11-12 years. This breed need lots of exercise, lots of space and the coat needs regular attention.
