The Chihuahua Pug mix – which is also known as a Chug is as you can see from the puppy photo above a very cute mixed breed.

On this page we will discuss everything about this hybrid including any health problems (such as the breathing problems often associated with the Pug), their temperament, coat, colors, grooming, training and lots more…

The Chihuahua Pug Mix

The Chihuahua Pug mix or Chug is not surprisingly a mixed breed or hybrid from breeding a Chihuahua and Pug. As with all mixed breeds a Chug can take characteristics from both parents – may be more from the father than from the mother or vice versa. Before we go into more detail regarding the Chihuahua Pug mix we will give a brief guide about each individual breed.

Chihuahua…

Size Stature – The Chihuahua is a very small breed of dog that has become quite popular with the celebrity pack – who are often seen carrying their little pooch around in a hand bag. This breed will often not grow much taller than 20 cm (8 inches) high and will weigh up to 3 kg (seven pounds) – (although they can weigh as little as 1 kg (two pounds).

Grooming – The grooming of this breed is relatively easy but this will depend on whether you have short haired variety or long haired variety. You should brush the coat regularly so that you can brush through any tangles and stop the coat from becoming matted. However, grooming is not just about the coat and should involve you brushing your dogs teeth so that plaque doesn’t build up and cause decay. You should also make sure that the nails are trimmed  – if you prefer you can always go to a professional to do this for you if you feel more comfortable.

Coat – The coat can be short or long and can vary in colors.

Character and Temperament – This breed of dog makes up for it’s small size with it’s strong and utterly fearless character. The breed can become a little yappy but this can be controlled with consistent obedience training. They love to be the center of attention, are very intelligent and love being around the family and receiving lots of affection. They are very intelligent and love to just sit on your lap and be stroked. They are very small and because of this may not be the best dog to own if you have small children as they can be quite easily injured if mishandled.

Living Quarters – The Chihuahua is small enough to live in a flat or apartment and the breed don’t need lots of exercise. As previously mentioned they are utterly fearless and have no fear of dogs that are five times their size – even when they probably should.

Pug…

Size and Stature – The Pug can grow up to about 30 cm (12 inches) and weigh anywhere from 7 up to 8 kg (sixteen – seventeen pounds). The build of this breed is short and stout – quite sturdy on their four short legs. The back and shoulders are relatively muscular and the head has a short and wrinkled muzzle. The Pug is also know to suffer from swallowing and breathing problems which can lead to snoring and even cause your dog to snort.

Grooming – The coat is very short so is very easy to groom and maintain. Brush your dog fairly regularly, brush your dog’s teeth and keep the nails clipped. One of the easiest dogs to keep groomed.

Coat – The coat is very dense but also very soft. The color of the coat can vary but it will normally appear beige, silver/grey or a white/yellowish color. The muzzle is always a black color.

Character and Temperament – This breed is very popular mainly because of it’s balanced and even temperament. They are very loyal, relatively easy to train, good with children, sensitive and quite intelligent.

Living Quarters – This breed can live quite happily in a Flat or Apartment but they need to be kept stimulated with lots of attention, play-time and a good collection of safe toys. Regular exercise is important but obviously due to their small size overly long walks are not needed.
