The Chinese Crested Powderpuff
The Chinese Crested Powderpuff (in the picture above) is one of two varieties of the same breed, the second variety is simply called the Chinese Crested dog and is shown in the picture below.
As you can see from the pictures, the first variety (the Powderpuff) has a long coat that covers the entire body and the second – some would consider strange looking and dare we say it even ugly (please don’t write in).
The second variety shown in the picture below has hair on the head, feet, tail and ears and the rest of the body appears to be hairless (although their is hair present it is difficult to see).
A Quick Guide to the Chinese Crested Powderpuff…
- Size/AKC – American Kennel Club group – Toy Breed
- Moulting/shedding – this breed either don’t shed at all or shed very lightly.
- Life Span – 10 – 12 years of age.
- Size of Litter – 2 up to 4 puppies in a litter – which can include a Powderpuff and the hairless variety.
- Hair – The length is long.
- Color – This breed come in all colors.
- Male Weight/Height – 12 inches (30 cm) & 10 pounds (4.5 kg) or less.
- Female Weight/Height – 12 inches (30 cm) & 10 pounds (4.5 kg) or less.
The Chinese Crested Powderpuff
Appearance & Description
- The appearance of the Chinese Crested Powderpuff is small and graceful.
- The head and skull are prominent and shaped like a dome. The muzzle tapers and all their teeth should be present (unlike the hairless variety where the teeth are often missing and crooked.
- The tail should be long and should gently curve upwards with a complete covering of hair.
- The legs should be straight and well developed with hair covering them including the feet.
Temperament
- Both varieties are great with the family and around children. They are intelligent and alert but do need allot of attention.
- If you are away from home for long periods of time or work long hours then this breed may not be the right dog for you as they are a family dog bred to be companions. If you do purchase this breed and the are out all day, it is quite likely that your dog will develop behavioral problems and anxiety issues.
- Both varieties tend to bond with certain members of the family – normally one or two people – may be you and your husband or you and your daughter. You may see your dog waiting patiently for the other family member to return after they have gone out.
- It is very difficult to re-home this breed so you need to make sure that you and your family are ‘right’ for your dog. Breeders will (or should) do thorough checks before placing this breed with you as they need to be sure that they are placing the dog with the right family.
Health
As with all breeds the Chinese Crested Powderpuff may be predisposed to certain health problems including…
- Skin Problems – Especially skin allergies – you may notice that your dog has an allergic reaction to certain garments including wool and lanolin.
- Patella Luxation/Luxating Patella – This when the kneecaps dislocate
- Legg Calve Perthes – This is when the femur degenerates due to disease – this will cause joint pain and mobility issues.
- Teeth Problems – This is a common problem where massive tartar build up causes teeth loss.
Exercise, Behavior, Socialization & Obedience Training
- The Chinese Crested Powderpuff is a very intelligent breed and can be stubborn as a puppy – for this reason it is important that you start obedience training early and socialize your puppy with as many new experiences as possible. Puppy training classes may also be an option as it is a good way to meet other dog owners start puppy socialization and get good tips.
- When out and about with your dog you need to be careful as they are very small and fragile so can be easily injured – don’t leave your Powderpuff with small children for this reason.
- This breed love to play games especially fetch and hide and seek.
- This breed is very easy to house train – due to the intelligence and eagerness to please you the owner.
- They are also excellent at learning tricks as they want to please – sit, fetch and walking on their hind legs is all easy for this breed.
- Although this breed are very cute don’t over coddle them. You often see celebrities like Paris Hilton carrying their dog in a bag – this is a bad idea – they have legs and need to walk on them. If you do over coddle your dog this can inadvertently cause separation anxiety when you are not around to show all this attention and affection.
- The Chinese Crested Powderpuff may also dig holes outside – although this is easy to cure by diverting their attention to a sand pit or somewhere they are allowed to dig.
- As mentioned before don’t leave your dog alone for long periods as they may show destructive behavior by starting chewing on objects around the House due to their anxiety and boredom.
- Another problem with being left on their own is a tendency to bark – but this is only if they have been left alone for long periods.

A Face Only a Mother Could Love…
Sorry does that sound harsh, we actually love this variety probably more than the Chinese Crested Powderpuff just for their fantastic character. This type are beginning to get quite a following mainly due to their appearance, character and fantastic temperament.
